SOM's faculty among nation's leadersThe University of South Carolina's faculty members represent leaders in teaching, research, patient care, and service in the community. The faculty-to-student ratio is nearly 1:1, providing students with better learning opportunities. Faculty serve as mentors and friends to their students. Nationally, faculty are also making an impact. Through a $200,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, school faculty have helped medical schools around the United States improve their geriatric education programs for medical students. Charles Blake, a professor of cell and developmental biology and anatomy, has served as president of the Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine. Faculty are also international leaders. Janice Edwards is director of the Genetic Counseling Education program and in 2006 was elected chair of a new international organization, the Transnational Association of Genetic Counselors. The school hosts the TAGC Web site, making it the world's main conduit for genetic counseling information. South Carolinians, however, benefit the most from faculty expertise and a tremendous volume of care to uninsured patients:
